What Drawings and Technical Requirements Should You Prepare for a Custom MIM Quote?

For a custom metal injection molding (MIM) project, start by gathering six types of information: drawings or samples, intended use and assembly relationships, material requirements, critical dimensions and tolerances, surface and acceptance requirements, and expected quantities and delivery plans. You do not need every detail finalized before starting a discussion. Mark any unresolved items as “to be assessed.”

1. Drawings or samples: define the part to be manufactured

If drawings are available, provide the current revision of the 2D drawing or 3D model, together with the part name, model and revision. If you supply both 2D and 3D files, make sure they describe the same revision. Explain any differences first to avoid working from inconsistent specifications.

If complete drawings are not yet available, physical samples, photographs from different angles and approximate dimensions can help start a discussion about the application and manufacturing approach. Photographs help explain the shape, but critical dimensions, hole locations and mating relationships still need verification. Photographs alone cannot define final manufacturing and acceptance requirements.

2. Intended use and assembly: explain how the part works

Beyond the part itself, explain where it is installed, which components it connects to, and which features affect assembly or operation. If rotation, locking, locating or load-bearing functions are involved, identify the relevant features and provide any existing operating conditions or test requirements.

For example, a hole may locate a component or form part of a rotating fit. Explaining its function helps both parties identify the dimensions and acceptance methods that need particular attention.

3. Material: separate specified requirements from options still under review

If a material grade has already been specified, use the designation in the drawing or technical document and include the required properties. If the material has not been selected, describe the operating environment, corrosion-resistance needs and any existing strength or hardness requirements for further assessment.

ChuangLe’s regular production materials include 304L, 316L and 17-4PH. Other material requests require an assessment of feedstock, equipment and process conditions, followed by sample verification before further manufacturing proceeds. A materials list does not establish suitability for a specific part.

4. Dimensions and tolerances: identify features that affect function

When requesting a quote, identify dimensions that directly affect assembly and function, such as hole diameters, hole spacing, mating surfaces and locating features, and specify their tolerances. Include any required measurement datums, gauges or inspection methods.

If tolerances have not yet been finalized, start by identifying the functional requirements and features that need discussion. The final manufacturing plan and dimensional acceptance criteria should follow the drawings and technical requirements confirmed by both parties.

5. Surface and acceptance requirements: define the required delivery condition

Identify visible surfaces and any requirements for color, gloss or surface treatment. Indicate whether an approved sample or appearance standard is available. List any required secondary operations, inspections or delivery documentation during the quotation stage; specific arrangements are confirmed after assessment.

Reference photographs can help communicate the intended appearance, but cannot fully define color, gloss and surface condition. Where appearance matters, agree on a confirmation method so that descriptions such as “bright” or “smooth” are understood consistently.

6. Quantities and delivery: separate samples from volume requirements

List sample quantities, first-batch quantities and expected subsequent demand separately, along with the desired sample and volume delivery dates. If quantities are not yet fixed, provide an estimated range and identify it as a forecast.

If you want to compare the current process with a MIM option, define the scope of the comparison: whether part prices, mold costs, secondary machining, surface treatment and inspection requirements are included. Consistent delivery specifications and quantity assumptions make comparisons more meaningful. Specific prices and lead times are confirmed after project assessment.
